When To Get a Fire Extinguisher Recharge Service

Recharging is necessary after every use or if an extinguisher shows signs of depressurization. Have you recently discharged your fire extinguisher? Even a small discharge can necessitate a recharge to ensure it is fully charged for safety.

For most models, recharges are also recommended every six years, even if they haven’t been used. This periodic recharge helps ensure your extinguishers are fully charged and compliant. If you notice your extinguisher has been tampered with or shows a loss in pressure, contact us immediately for a recharge.

Fire Extinguisher FAQ

Fire extinguishers should be recharged after any use and as part of routine maintenance every six years. Following NFPA guidelines, a full recharge every ten years is also recommended, even for unused extinguishers.

Not all fire extinguishers are designed to be recharged, but several types typically require this service to maintain their effectiveness. These include:

  • Portable Fire Extinguishers: Commonly found in homes and businesses, these need regular recharging.

  • Wheeled Fire Extinguishers: Often used in industrial settings, these larger units also require periodic recharging.

  • Fixed Unit Fire Extinguishers: Installed in specific locations, these units need to be recharged to ensure they are always ready.

  • Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers: These extinguishers, used for electrical fires, must be recharged after use.

  • Halon Fire Extinguishers: Although less common due to environmental concerns, these extinguishers still require recharging if in use.

Just a tiny bit of discharge reduces the extinguisher’s pressure and effectiveness. Fire extinguisher recharging is a crucial aspect of fire safety that ensures your extinguisher is ready to use in case of an emergency. Over time, extinguishers can lose pressure, or the extinguishing agent can degrade, making them less effective or even non-functional when needed most.
