If the power goes out, circuitry in the light fixture activates, switching on the backup battery so building occupants can see the way out. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has established emergency lighting requirements under the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has co-opted these codes, which require all buildings to have illuminated paths of egress at all times. Fire exit signs must also be illuminated by a reliable light source, whether internally, externally, or with photoluminescence.
For your building to meet these codes, you must install emergency lighting to ensure occupants can see the way out during a power outage. Failure to comply with NFPA and OSHA safety codes could result in crippling fines. It’s much more affordable, not to mention safer for your customers and employees if you meet the requirements.
Compliance begins with emergency lighting installation, but it doesn’t end there. Business owners must also perform monthly tests. Backup light fixtures feature a built-in test switch on the casing that simulates a power outage.
To perform a test, simply press and hold the button on each light for 30 seconds. The lights should come on and maintain a stable brightness for the duration of the test. If the lights dim or some of the bulbs don’t work, have them repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
If you have a large number of devices that make individual testing too time-consuming, you can also flip the circuit breaker to activate the backup battery feature of your emergency lights. Be sure to back up data and shut off computers before doing this if they’re located on the same circuits as your emergency light system.
In addition to monthly testing, professional emergency lighting inspections are also required once a year. These tests must last 90 minutes, which is the length of time backup lights must be able to provide emergency lighting if the main power fails. Visual inspections also take place to ensure all fixtures and bulbs are in good condition.
Don’t forget to illuminate the restroom, often an interior room with no windows. The day-to-day lighting should be automatic and incorporate motion sensors to save energy. Most importantly, the backup lights should turn on when the main power fails. Proper fixture placement is important in public restrooms where stall doors may obstruct the light.
